Homemade Vanilla

The only ingredients needed are vanilla beans, alcohol (vodka, brandy, or rum) and a tightly sealable glass jar

Slice the vanilla beans in half lengthwise and add to jar. Completely fill jar with alcohol of choice (vodka is most common) and store in a cool dark place for 6-8 weeks. Remember to shake the bottle every few days.

Homemade vanilla extract can last for years. Some "home brewers" will remove the vanilla beans after 2-4 months. A few may even strain and filter their extract in order to remove any impurities. Others will leave the vanilla beans in the jars for several years and will continue to add vodka to the bottle as the vanilla extract is used. However, the one thing all home brewers agree on is that there is nothing quite like homemade vanilla extract.
